Recently the state of California has been in the news a good bit. One of the interesting debates, and new laws adopted by some counties is a ban on plastic bags. In the country of Los Angeles a new ordinance banning retailers from using plastic shopping bags i went into effect July 1. In light of many people making the argument that it infringes on consumersÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ right to choose, but there is more than consumers right to choose. Something overlooked is the fact plastic bags have been cheap to produce, free for consumers and available essentially everywhere for decades, weÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ve all taken them for granted when we go shopping. Now these stores are starting to use paper bags, and charging customers 10 cents per bag used. This has prompted some shoppers in LA County to drive down the road and shop at stores in neighboring areas. What are your thoughts on the plastic bag ban?Ã‚Â

Articles usually leave out the facts as well as the side by side comparison. A truthful look at what is required to produce 1000 T-shirt plastic bags versus 1000 similar paper bags. If the biased media would present the facts, as discerning people we could make educated and wise decisions. Plastic bags do not â€œdown cycleâ€, meaning plastic bags can produce plastic bags infinitely. On the other hand, paper has a limited recyclable life span. The fibers deteriorate too much after continued re-pulping. At the end of papers recyclable life it can only be used in fillers and lower grade materials.
