There has been a long debate about adding fluoride to tap water. Many proponents and researchers have stated that water fluoridation is a public health concern. Studies in the past have resulted in findings that having ingested too much fluoride can causes crippling bone abnormalities and brittleness. Additional studies done in 2006 by the National Academy of Science states that fluoride has negative effects on a childâ€™s intelligence. Now there are new reports that over fluoridation can cause children to have tooth streaking or spottiness causing long term dental problems. Currently the fluoride standards and levels are under review by government officials, but there are a few things you can do to protect your homes drinking water. The best options is to use a water filter systems designed to reduce the amounts of fluoride in your tap water such as reverse osmosis system or water distiller, and put your water in a reusable eco-friendly steel water bottle when you on the go. A study conducted by the Environmental Working Group, took drinking water samples from 35 major U.S. cities, and a shocking 31 cities were found to have high levels of hexavalent chromium (chromium-6) water contamination. The highest concentrations of chromium-6 were found in Norman, OK, Honolulu HI, and Riverside, CA. There are different forms of this naturally occurring element, but Chromium-6 itself is classified as a carcinogen made famous in the film â€œErin Brockovichâ€. Yet in the face of mounting evidence of the contaminantâ€™s toxic effects, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not set a legal limit for chromium-6 in tap water and does not require water utilities to test for it.

If you are concerned about chromium in your drinking water, the FDA recommends installing a chromium water filter system that has been certified to remove chromium-6 (hexvalent chromium). UV Lamp Bulbs that are used in water purification systems are not like traditional light bulbs. It is easy to know when to change a typical light bulb, when it goes out, but UV water systems are not that easy. Since the UV light gives of energy at certain wave lengths and intensity, it is possible that the UV Lamp from a water purification system is still on but not working to it maximum effectiveness.
